Values as a caregiver:
· Compassionate: We as humans need more than medical care; we need emotional, physical and spiritual support from compassionate caregivers.
· Valuing: Everyone should be treated with reverence and awe, no matter their mental or physical capabilities; everyone has a value and history.
· Present: To be a good caregiver, we must be physically present with the individual and experience their life by putting our personal goals and agendas to the side.
· Attentive: Caregivers should be alert, attentive listeners, and pay attention to detail; listening and observing allows us to better understand the needs of the individual.
· Delight: We should offer and look for the moments of delight and share that joy with the individual.
· Community Oriented: Every individual has a story that is part of the larger narrative of community; as the community, when one suffers, we all suffer.
